Austin, Texas novelist Ruth Pennebaker, who's old enough to call herself "fabulous," writes about family, politics, marriage, friendship, feminism, aging and whatever else occurs to her.
Have been so inspired, that I've rented myself an apartment in UPPER Upper West Side for the months of June and July - I've always wanted to be a New Yorker, but like you, have left it rather late (am now retired). But I'm going to try and get my lifelong hankering for New York City out of my system, especially now that I am obliged to live in deepest southwest rural France

I went to NYC once on business. Could not live there, BUT it did improve my self-esteem because here out West, I'm considered high-strung ... but there? Baby, I'm mellow, mellow.

Got a call from a new client with that verbal intensity this week. It literally made my hands shake. It took me several hours to let go of the anxiety I felt after being on the phone with him for a few minutes.

Crazy!

Fit in or not ... enjoy the adventure.

Yes, but aren't you supposed to come to Manhattan when you're young and unformed? I missed that by a good 35 years.

A common thread among the bios of Southern Writers is that they invariably reach adulthood and abandon the bougainvillea in favor of Gotham in order to "find themselves." Once found, they distinguish their art by writing about the people, places and ways they left behind.

So don't stress about trying to fit in up there, just find yourself-- or whats left of her!

Or finding yourself on the completely wrong commuter train and not discovering it until you came to the end where everyone had to get off. Well it was reeeallly dark out (whimper).

Ruth, when you get that incredulous face stare, just stare back. I'm sure you are pretty good at it after being in NY for a couple of months. And no one really notices the direction you're heading! Cheers.
