Makes me glad I made the trip 20 odd years ago with my 3 British/American children. I thought it was my duty. Two of the children walked; I carried the 22 month old up every step. Happily, it was before the long lines and the security bitches, but the Liberty impersonators, like the poor, are always with you.

That nice piece of writing makes me want to see the statue in person -- and then again, not want to. My mother came into this country through Ellis Island from England. She said all the women were herded into a big hall and told to strip. Then they were deloused. When she finally became a citizen she was required to renounce allegiance to George III. I guess it's the combination of the silly with the sublime that gives life some spice.

I'm so glad you went! We took our kids and went to the statue and to Ellis Island a few years ago. I enjoyed seeing the Statue, but Ellis Island just blew me over. I had a "moment" there - where I felt emotionally connected to all the people who came through that building. It was absolutely incredible.

Thanks for the up close and personal tour of "Liberty Enlightening the World." At last you've done something many native New Yorkers claim they have not.
Maybe I should contact GLBT headquarters and ask them if they know Liberty IS TRULY enlightening the world-- one photo-op at the time?
Regarding encounter with Ilsa: no wonder men are assigned the task of statue impersonations, as only females can accurately portray b****es.

Ruth -As always, you got me to laugh. Love the photo! I haven't been to Lady Liberty in ages, but I so enjoy the view when I'm traveling on various roads in and out of NYC.

Our American experience with the Statue of Liberty was exactly like this in June of this year, bitchy security chick and all! You're observations really put it into perspective. Thanks for the reality check.

Seems like impersonators in general are men. Maybe they are more likely to yearn to be someone else. I would, if I were a man.
