Austin, Texas novelist Ruth Pennebaker, who's old enough to call herself "fabulous," writes about family, politics, marriage, friendship, feminism, aging and whatever else occurs to her. Her upcoming novel, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakthrough, will be published by Berkley in January 2011.

Actually, I think this economy offers the perfect opportunity for home improvement. Home-building has ground to a halt & contractors and subs are scrambling for work. If you could find the $ for construction you would have your pick of high-quality, motivated workers. OK, so materials might be expensive but I'll bet there are used building material outlets in your area that are just brimming with selections. Nothing like a crappy economy to make high-skilled workers plentiful & eager to please... Best of luck if you choose to plunge in. Oh, yeah, and my experience with closet space is that the more you have, the more crap builds up in them. I'll bet your existing closets have stuff in them that you never use & probably have forgotten about. If you had to clean them to make way for construction, you'd probably abandon a bunch of stuff in the dumpster...
